Description

Nepenthes ventricosa × epiphyata is a striking intermediate hybrid pairing the extraordinary adaptability and pitcher quality of N. ventricosa (arguably the most cultivation-friendly Nepenthes in existence) with the unusual, elongated, pale-coloured pitchers of N. epiphyata, a rarely-seen Borneo endemic that grows as a true epiphyte on tree trunks and branches in montane cloud forest.

🌿 About this plant

N. epiphyata contributes a distinctive elongated, tubular pitcher form with pale cream colouration and a narrow, inward-curving peristome — very different from the rotund, wide-mouthed pitchers of ventricosa. The hybrid sits between the two extremes: longer and more cylindrical than pure ventricosa, but retaining the ventricosa peristome width and colour intensity.

This Female (F) clone is vegetatively confirmed. Female plants are important for those interested in seed production — ventricosa × epiphyata is an unusual enough cross that hybrid seeds from a quality female parent would be of collector interest.

• ☀️ Light: Bright indirect light or filtered direct sun. Ventricosa and epiphyata both grow under forest canopy in nature, but appreciate bright dappled light. Morning sun is beneficial.
• 💧 Water: Distilled or RO water. The ventricosa parent makes this hybrid quite forgiving about medium moisture levels — keep evenly moist but not saturated.
• 🌫️ Humidity: 60–80% RH. One of the more humidity-tolerant crosses involving a highland parent. The ventricosa genes provide considerable buffer against the typical humidity demands of highland lineages.
• 🌡️ Temperature: 18–28 °C. Intermediate — grows well in highland India (Coorg, Nilgiris, Shillong) without supplemental cooling. For hot plains, a grow cabinet with evening ventilation brings temperatures within range.
• 🪴 Medium: Long-fibre sphagnum, or sphagnum-bark mix. The epiphytic habit of the epiphyata parent means this hybrid is comfortable in a coarser, airier mix than most Nepenthes.

🌱 Establishing your plant in India

• 🫧 Week 1: unbox immediately, sit the pot in a bright, shaded, humid spot and let the plant settle for 3–4 days before any repotting
• 🪴 Repotting: only if needed — use fresh long-fibre sphagnum or a sphagnum-perlite mix in a plastic pot with drainage; never garden soil or fertiliser
• 💦 Water: keep the medium damp with rain / RO / distilled water; a 5–10 mm tray of water is fine in hot weather
• 🌬️ Airflow: once acclimatised, avoid a permanently sealed box — moving air improves pitcher formation
• 🐜 Feeding: optional — a few small insects per month once pitchers are active; no fertiliser in the medium

Orders are packed in batches alongside live lab work; typical processing time is 2–6 weeks depending on the plant and the season. We pause dispatch during peak monsoon (December–January).
