Why Your Nepenthes Is Not Making Pitchers

Why Your Nepenthes Is Not Making Pitchers

A Nepenthes that grows leaves but no pitchers is almost always telling you about its conditions. Work through these causes in order.

1. Humidity is too low

Pitchers are expensive for the plant to build. In dry air, many species stop making them or the tendril tips dry out before the pitcher inflates. Raise humidity with a humidity tray, grouping plants, a humidifier or a small enclosure with some airflow.

2. Not enough light

Bright light with a little morning sun helps. Dim rooms give long, weak leaves. Move the plant to a brighter spot or add a horticultural grow light, and increase light gradually.

3. The plant is too young or just moved

Young plants and freshly shipped plants often pause. Give them several weeks to settle before judging. See what to expect in the first weeks.

4. Temperature or water problems

5. Root or media trouble

Compacted, old or waterlogged media suffocates roots. Check the roots and repot into fresh, airy mix.

Be patient

Once the cause is fixed, new leaves will usually form tendrils and pitchers within a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the species.
