Description

Variety: Red Striped Pure (M) — A bold clone showing the red base colour of ampullaria with vivid dark red to maroon vertical striping along the pitcher body. The stripes converge near the peristome, creating a dramatic radiating pattern. One of the most ornamental ampullaria colour forms.

🌿 About this plant

Nepenthes ampullaria is one of the most extraordinary pitcher plants in cultivation — instead of catching and digesting insects, it has evolved to predominantly collect falling leaf litter and animal droppings from the rainforest canopy above, breaking them down for nitrogen. The pitchers sit directly on the ground in dense rosettes, wide-mouthed and with a dramatically reduced lid, perfectly shaped for catching debris rather than insects.

This ground-hugging rosette habit makes N. ampullaria one of the most compact Nepenthes for collection — it rarely produces tall climbing stems, instead sending out horizontal stolons that produce dense carpets of pitchers. In a mature plant, dozens of pitchers carpet the ground simultaneously, creating a visually stunning display.

The pitchers are small (6–12 cm) but produced in extraordinary abundance. Each pitcher colour variety has been selected from wild populations across Borneo, Sumatra, and peninsular Malaysia and stabilised through careful cultivation. The variety offered here is labelled below.

• ☀️ Light: Bright indirect light or dappled shade. Direct morning sun is tolerated; harsh midday sun bleaches and stunts growth. In India, a bright north or east-facing outdoor position works well year-round in coastal zones.
• 💧 Water: Distilled, RO, or rainwater only. Tray-watering or top-watering from above — the wide-mouthed pitchers actually benefit from occasional rainwater filling the pitcher directly, mimicking the natural process of leaf debris washing in.
• 🌫️ Humidity: 70–90% RH preferred. In coastal India (Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu), this is achievable outdoors year-round. Inland, a humidity tent or grow cabinet is recommended.
• 🌡️ Temperature: Lowland species — thrives at 25–35 °C days, 20–25 °C nights. Tolerates normal Indian tropical conditions with ease. Not cold-tolerant below 15 °C.
• 🪴 Medium: Live or dried long-fibre sphagnum, or a 2:1 mixture of sphagnum and perlite. Repot every 18–24 months to maintain medium freshness.

🌱 Establishing your plant in India

• 🫧 Week 1: unbox immediately, sit the pot in a bright, shaded, humid spot and let the plant settle for 3–4 days before any repotting
• 🪴 Repotting: only if needed — use fresh long-fibre sphagnum or a sphagnum-perlite mix in a plastic pot with drainage; never garden soil or fertiliser
• 💦 Water: keep the medium damp with rain / RO / distilled water; a 5–10 mm tray of water is fine in hot weather
• 🌬️ Airflow: once acclimatised, avoid a permanently sealed box — moving air improves pitcher formation
• 🐜 Feeding: optional — a few small insects per month once pitchers are active; no fertiliser in the medium
