Nepenthes catch insects, but healthy plants can grow well with very little feeding. The goal is a small, gentle supplement, never a heavy dose.
Do they need feeding?
Plants kept outdoors or near windows catch their own prey. Plants kept inside may benefit from a light feed every few weeks during active growth.
Safe ways to feed
- Insects: place a small insect, such as an ant or a tiny cricket, into an open pitcher now and then. Never overfill.
- Diluted foliar feed: use a balanced or orchid fertiliser at a quarter of the label strength, misted lightly onto the leaves.
What to avoid
- Never pour fertiliser into the soil or into the pitchers; it can burn roots and rot pitchers.
- Do not feed meat, dairy or large insects, which can decay and spoil the trap.
- Do not feed a stressed, newly arrived or recently repotted plant.
Signs you are overdoing it
Blackened pitcher edges, a foul smell, or leaf tips that burn after misting mean you should stop and flush with clean water.
Healthy growth also depends on good water, a suitable potting mix and enough humidity. Browse the Nepenthes collection.
